OmahaNebraska

Omaha shifts from one of the country’s largest zoo campuses to cobblestone warehouse blocks, broad new riverfront parks, Art Deco Union Station, and neighborhood tables where downtown finally gives way to porch-lined streets.

Omaha in three parts

Downtown, the zoo, and the neighborhoods occupy different parts of Omaha

The Old Market and RiverFront form a connected downtown walk. Henry Doorly Zoo sits south of the center and fills most of a day. The Joslyn, Dundee, and Benson lie west; Lauritzen Gardens rises south of downtown above the river and rail yards.

A zoo day measured in miles, not exhibits

Henry Doorly Zoo spreads its headline habitats across hills, enormous indoor environments, and long outdoor loops. Arrive near opening, choose several priorities, and let heat and tired legs decide the afternoon rather than chasing every path.

Brick warehouses and cobblestones in Omaha's Old Market

Brick streets that lead into new parkland

The Old Market preserves brick fronts, loading-bay proportions, galleries, shops, and restaurant rooms from Omaha's warehouse era. Gene Leahy Mall begins just north and continues toward the riverfront parks.

Baseball crowd beneath the lights in downtown Omaha

A city that changes when baseball arrives

The College World Series fills Charles Schwab Field and the blocks around it with afternoon heat, late games, fan events, and scarce rooms. Outside tournament dates, the same north-downtown district is much calmer and easier to cross.

Between Union Station and the Missouri

Union Station and the RiverFront share downtown Omaha

The Durham Museum occupies Omaha’s 1931 Union Station, where the restored waiting room supplies the brass, terrazzo, and Art Deco grandeur before the exhibits turn toward railroads, commerce, and regional history. A few blocks away, Gene Leahy Mall opens into Heartland of America Park and Lewis & Clark Landing.

Continue to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge for the best sense of the Missouri River as a border and a working landscape. The bridge reaches Council Bluffs, Iowa, with open water, wind, and the Omaha skyline visible along the crossing. The state-line marker is only one stop on the span.

Day with children

Give the zoo first claim on everyone’s energy

Enter near opening, do not promise every major habitat, and keep an indoor complex available for heat, cold, or a tired afternoon.

Day for art and history

Choose Durham or Joslyn before adding another stop

Union Station brings Omaha’s rail story downtown. The Joslyn offers art, free general admission, and grounds west of the central grid. Give either more than a gap between meals.

Evening beyond downtown

Dundee and Benson trade downtown blocks for neighborhood streets

Dundee’s Underwood Avenue and Benson’s Maple Street trade convention blocks for independent restaurants, bars, music rooms, and a more neighborhood-sized walk after dinner.
